Internship at LervikDesign

In only 6 days I’m leaving for Stockholm to go do a 5-month internship at LervikDesign.
This internship will start at the 14th of February and will go on until half June.

I shall be updating  frequently about my internship, so keep posted.

Ikkuna – Window to the future

It has been a while since I posted an update and since the end of the semester is coming, it was about time.

Our small business project is drawing to an end.

The company we started up for the “design for the other 90%” assignment is called Ikkuna (which stands for: window to the future).

Our group consists of our CEO: Jielt Gregoire and Jonas Debergh, Bob De Troy, Mehmet Mert Sezer (a Turkish exchange student from the technical university of Istanbul) and myself.

For the assignment we decided to make the MIY-stove (make it yourself stove). It’s a mould for a clay-stove.

This is a rendering of the metal mould.

And a model of the clay-stove.

We are going to sell the mould to non-profit organisations in Burkina Faso, that can teach the people how to make the stove, by simply applying the clay they find in their soil to the inside of the mould.

Tomorrow we have to present the final product for the first time. Then one more presentation before the exam in January….

Oproep

Tot en met maandag 25 oktober is het mogelijk de Innovation Festival tentoonstelling te bezoeken.

Als bezoeker krijg je een muntje en bij elk product staat een spaarvarken. De bedoeling is dat je je muntje steekt in het product wat jij het beste vindt.
Op maandag 25 oktober wordt om 18u30 bekendgemaakt welke 3 producten de meeste muntjes kregen, zij zullen in 2011 naar Tallinn (Estland) gaan voor de grote finale (tussen 6 deelnemende landen).

Ik wil iedereen oproepen deze tentoonstelling te bezoeken (en op ons product te stemmen).

Interieur 2010 – 15-24 oktober

Gisteren ben ik naar Interieur 2010 gegaan.
Het is de 22ste editie van de biënnale in Kortrijk.

De eregast van deze editie is Junya Ishigami, bekend Japans architect.

Zijn stand was heel indrukwekkend. Het is een wit wonderland waarin je gehuld bent in een waas die zo stralend is dat je je in de hemel waant.

Daarnaast stond de stand van BramBoo, hij is designer van het jaar.

Naast de normale hallen die gevuld zijn met alle standen van de gekende merken, is er ook de Underground met de Young Designers Fair.
En enkele andere indrukwekkende dingen zoals de exploded view van de nieuwe Audi A1.

Nog een indrukwekkend zicht was de volgende stand van Established and Sons:

Een tafelblad van 3mm dik uit carbon dat het gewicht van een formule 1 wagen draagt.

Als je verbaasd wilt worden bij elke stap die je zet dan moet je naar Interieur 2010.

Interieur 2010 – October 15-24

I went to Interieur 2010 yesterday.
It’s 22nd edition of the biennale in Kortrijk.

The guest of honour of this edition was Junya Ishigami, famous japanese architect.

His installation was really impressive. A white wonderland which was so bright you thought you were in heaven and there was a constant haze.

Next to that was BramBoo, designer of the year.

Aside from the normal halls with all the famous brands exhibiting their goods, there was the Underground with the Young Designers Fair.
And some other impressive things, such as the exploded view of the new Audi A1.

Another quite impressive sight was this installation by Established and Sons:

If you want to be amazed for hours on end than you should definitly go to Interieur 2010.

IF – The End

Friday October 15 was our last deadline: the presentation on location.
The product had to be finished and we were to present it in the “paardenstallen” (horse stables), where the products will stay for another week on view.

IF – eindpresentatie

Gisteren was de laatste deadline: de presentatie op locatie.
Het product moest af zijn en we moesten presenteren in de paardenstallen, waar de producten nog een week blijven staan voor het publiek.

IF – design

Today we had to finish our planning of the making of the prototype of our product and present it.
Every step was thought out and put to paper with a lot of care. We also had to think of the design of course. Since our target group are children and we can’t make our system a lot smaller than in the first working model (we did tests to check which is the smallest possible size), we decided to make our “machine” something funny. Namely the chicken below:

The top half of the chicken is our pump and the lower half replaces the wooden box from the proof of concept.

We made a planning to build the chicken and Friday we shall be presenting our finished product.

IF – vormgeving

Vandaag moest ons plan van aanpak voor de bouw van het prototype af zijn en gepresenteerd worden.
Elke stap werd minutieus uitgedacht en opgetekend. We moesten natuurlijk ook over de vormgeving gaan nadenken. Aangezien onze doelgroep kinderen is en het systeem niet heel erg klein gemaakt kan worden (we deden testen om te zien wat de kleinst mogelijke versie is) gingen we voor iets ludiek. Namelijk onderstaande kip:

Hierbij is de bovenkant van de kip de pomp van ons systeem en de onderkant vervangt het houten bakje van onze proof op concept.

Er werd een planning opgesteld om dit gevaarte te maken en vrijdag zullen we het afgewerkte product presenteren.

Innovation Festival – Week 1 Update

After a lot of different tests, there were two ways that seemed the best to peel the egg. Blowing out the egg seemed the most fun of the two, especially because our inventor is a 9-year old girl.
She came to visit on Wednesday and when we showed her how her invention would work, she was quite enthusiastically.
Thursday there was a presentation, so we made a quick model to show how the finished product is gonna work.
